Tomy, a Japanese toy company founded in 1923 by Eiichiro Tomiyama, started production of the Tomica diecast models in about 1/60th scale in 1970. Two years later, another model car range was introduced under the name of Tomica Dandy. These models were very detailed and mostly made after Japanese original cars, but there were also models of foreign sports cars and popular cars. At first, the scale of the car models varied from 1/38th to 1/49th, depending on the size of the original, and some commercial vehicles were produced in even smaller scales. In the 1980s, 1/43rd became the standard scale for all models. The production of the Dandy series ceased in 1994, but in 2000 several models were re-edited for Tomica's 30th anniversary.
